Our story

In 2018 Angel Maile and Bonolo Mathabela took on a single logistics client from a borrowed desk in Braamfontein. Both had spent years inside organisations where the technical decisions and the commercial ones were made in different rooms, and had watched what that costs.

The rule was simple: only take work we would put our own names on, and only staff it with people senior enough to say the difficult thing early. Eight years later the company is larger, the projects are larger, and the rule is unchanged.

Today we deliver into eleven countries from Sandton: platform engineering, mobile products, cloud migrations, and applied AI for logistics groups, insurers, health networks, retailers, and utilities.

Where we are going, and why any of it matters.

    To engineer platforms that are fast, observable, and genuinely owned by the organisations that pay for them, delivered by senior people who stay accountable from discovery through handover.

    African engineering as a global default.

    A studio whose work sets the standard for enterprise software delivered from this continent, judged on the same terms as the best teams anywhere: reliability, craft, and measurable outcomes.

  • Why we exist

    Too much software is built badly, expensively.

    We have both been in the room when a two-year programme was quietly written off. The waste is rarely technical. It is misalignment, silence about risk, and nobody accountable for the outcome. That is the gap we exist to close.

    A schedule risk raised in week two is a conversation. The same risk in week ten is a crisis. We would rather be the partner who told you.

    Three engineers who have shipped this before will beat eight who have not. We staff for judgement and keep teams deliberately small.

    Prove it with numbers

    Every engagement carries measures agreed before we start. If we cannot show what changed, we have not finished.

    Success is your team confidently running what we built together, with the documentation to extend it and no dependency on us.

    Boring where it counts

    Novelty is spent deliberately, in the part of the system that differentiates you. Everything load-bearing is chosen to be unremarkable.

    Typography, motion, and interaction detail are how a product earns trust in the first five seconds. We treat them as engineering concerns.

Timeline

Eight years, five turning points.

  1. 2018

    Two engineers, one contract

    Angel and Bonolo take on a single logistics client from a borrowed desk in Braamfontein, with a rule that still holds: only work we would put our own names on.

  2. 2020

    The platform years

    Remote work reshapes every client's roadmap overnight. We spend eighteen months on cloud migrations and internal platforms, and learn what resilience actually costs.

  3. 2022

    A studio, not an agency

    The team reaches fourteen senior practitioners across engineering, design, and platform. We formalise the delivery model: small teams, fixed increments, measured outcomes.

  4. 2024

    Applied AI practice

    We build our first evaluation harness for a client and refuse to ship a model without one. It becomes standard on every AI engagement we take.

  5. 2026

    Sandton and beyond

    Sixty-eight clients across eleven countries, delivered from Johannesburg. The rule from 2018 is unchanged; there is simply more of it.

    Every change is read by another senior engineer. Critique is about the code and it is always specific.

    Clients see the board, the repository, and the demo. There is no polished version of the truth prepared for the steering committee.

Co-Founder & CTO

Angel co-founded Bonang Technologies after a decade spent building software inside organisations where the technology decisions and the commercial ones were made in separate rooms. The company exists to close that gap: engineering that starts from what the business is actually trying to achieve, and leadership that can hold both conversations at once.

As CTO their work concentrates on the two places where enterprise software either compounds or collapses: architecture decided early, and applied AI evaluated properly before anyone trusts it. Angel owns technical direction, sits in on the first discovery workshop of every engagement, and writes about the discipline of putting models into production.

Bonolo Mathabela

Co-Founder & COO

Bonolo co-founded Bonang Technologies to prove a specific point: that a small, senior team with clear standards ships better software than a large one with none. As COO they own how the studio runs: how work is estimated, how it is staffed and reviewed, and what is allowed to reach production.

Before Bonang, Bonolo spent years on platform and reliability engineering in high-volume systems, which is where the studio's habits come from: infrastructure as code, tests that mean something, observability from day one, and a strong preference for boring technology in the places that must not fail.

How we deliver

  • Own the boring layer

    Infrastructure as code, typed contracts, tests that mean something. The unglamorous parts are what let a platform be changed confidently in year three.

  • Spend novelty deliberately

    One or two interesting technology choices per project, placed where they differentiate the product. Everything load-bearing is chosen to be unremarkable.

  • Measure or do not claim

    Performance budgets, evaluation harnesses, DORA metrics. If we say something improved, there is a number and a before.

  • Design is engineering

    Type, spacing, motion, and interaction states are specified as tokens and reviewed like code, which is why the tenth screen looks like the first.
